DESIGN CONCEPT:

• Vilhelm Wohlert and the present CEO of Louis Poulsen Jens Kaastrup-Olsen had a fruitful collaboration and Mr. Kaastrup-Olsen asked Vilh. Wohlert to design a pendant in three different sizes accordingly suited for different room sizes. Furthermore Wohlert was presented with the demand for easy maintenance and change of light source. Today this fixture is hanging in many different buildings around the world including the University of Copenhagen, where it is beautifully adapted into the classical buildings. But also for the just recently built AHTS Headquarters in Copenhagen the architect Kim Utzon chose the Wohlert Pendant.

DESIGNER: Vilhelm Wohlert

Vilhelm Wohlert was born in Copenhagen in the year 1920. He was a professor of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1968-86.

Wohlert started his career in Klint's office in the 1940s, before going to teach for a period at Berkeley in California. Here he came into contact with the "Bay Area" architects, who had taken the ideals of the English Arts and Crafts movement and combined them with a passion for traditional Japanese architecture. Wohlert brought this style back to Denmark, fusing it with his own understanding of craft, where it found form at Louisiana in 1958.

In Denmark he built several churches, and restored others, including the Church of Our Lady, Copenhagen's cathedral. He also built a number of houses - complete with his own furniture and furnishings - that provide an exemplar of the Danish vision of a modern domestic architecture.
